As the capital of the Risaralda department, Pereira is a city of parks and is referred to as “the Pearl of the Otun River”. Pereira is an excellent base from which to embark on various day trips. You can head out to the hot springs at Santa Rosa de Cabal, hike in the Ucumari Park, gaze at the great variety of birds and butterflies in the Otun Quimbaya Sanctuary in addition to discovering authentic coffee fincas found dotted about the region. However, if you have more time to spare, then be sure to check out the city’s green spaces in the Jorge Eliecer Gaitan Park, the Lago Uribe Uribe Park and the Libertad Park or marvel at the intricate constructions of guadua – as bamboo is known here – found in the grounds of the Universidad Tecnologica de Pereira.
But don’t forget, Pereira also plays host to a large student population, and where there’s students, there’s bound to be vibrant nightlife…Colombian style!
